About AFP

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) represents more than 30,000 members in 229 chapters throughout the world, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education and certification programs.  The association fosters development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the fundraising profession.

AFP in History

History of the Association of Fundraising Professionals

While philanthropy and fundraising have grown significantly during the past 20 years, there was no organization of fundraisers until 1960. The American Association of Fund Raising Counsel (AAFRC) had represented fundraising firms for 25 years, and many local fundraising organizations existed; however, no organization yet represented the interests of charitable fundraisers.

AFP 50th Anniversary (1960-2010)

2010 marked the 50th anniversary of the Association of Fundraising Professionals! For five decades, AFP has been working to advance ethical and effective fundraising and support charities around the world that provide critical services to their communities. During that time, philanthropy has made so many extraordinary contributions to the world and played a key role in improving the lives of people in every conceivable way.

Diversity

Diversity is the seeking and achieving of a broad representation of experiences, perspectives, opinions and cultures. Inclusiveness is an essential source of vitality and strength for the effective pursuit of an organization's mission.

The AFP GLBT Page

The AFP Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender (GLBT) Page provides information and resources of interest to GLBT fundraisers and about GLBT donors.

The AFP African American Community Page

The AFP African American Community Page provides information and resources of interest to African-American fundraisers and those who work with organizations with an African-American audience.

Youth in Philanthropy

Where will the next generation of philanthropists come from? The obvious answer is from the youth of our country and the world. The same answer applies to the next generation of ethical fundraisers. AFP has an obligation to promote and encourage the involvement of young people in philanthropy and the profession of ethical fundraising.

National Philanthropy Day

National Philanthropy Day® (NPD) acknowledges the entire spectrum of services provided by the nonprofit community and recognizes the profound impact that philanthropy has on the fabric of society. And, each year AFP honors individuals and groups who, through their hard work and dedication, have enhanced philanthropy, their communities and the world.
