AFP Co-Founder William R. “Bill” Simms Passes Away

Covenant House Receives Award for Outstanding Achievement in E-Philanthropy

(March 27, 2007) At the Monday morning plenary session during the AFP International Conference on Fundraising, the Award for Outstanding Achievement in E-Philanthropy was presented to New York-based Covenant House, which is the largest privately funded childcare agency in the United States providing shelter and service to homeless and runaway youth.

Dallas-Area Students’ Artwork Recognized
(March 25, 2007) Diversity Art Showcase Winners

At this year’s AFP International Conference on Fundraising, the Diversity Art Showcase, sponsored by The Alford Group, features artwork by students from the Dallas area who attend The Oakridge School in Arlington, Texas, a private school whose student body includes students from 12 foreign countries. The artwork was selected by AFP, and a panel of judges determined the first-, second- and third-place winners, as well as those receiving honorable mention.

Howdy! The 44th AFP International Conference on Fundraising Begins in Dallas!
Welcome!

Texas—it’s like a whole other country. At least that’s what any Texan will say. This year, March 25–28, nearly 4,000 professional fundraisers—from Texas and other states, provinces and countries—have made Dallas their world.

Marc Chardon, the president and chief executive officer of Blackbaud, the full sponsor of this year’s conference, and Cheryl Reynolds, chair of the Dallas Host Committee, welcomed the enthusiastic crowd.

The Power of Passion

(March 25, 2007) Actress and activist Brooke Shields knows a thing or two about the power of celebrity. After all, she has spent nearly her entire life in front of a camera and in the public eye. What she has gradually come to know, however, is the power of passion.

At the Opening Plenary Session on Sunday, Shields spoke candidly and from the heart, displaying none of the “diva” qualities one would expect from someone who has been acting and modeling since she was only 11 months old. As she explained, this is due to the choices she has made along the way.

There Will Be a Minga!

If you have ever had any doubts about the value of youth in philanthropy, Craig Kielburger is living proof that one is never too young to become a philanthropist and activist.

Born in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, Kielburger was just 12 years old when he happened to see an article in the newspaper that would have a profound effect. He read about another 12-year-old boy on the other side of the world who had been murdered near his home in Pakistan. The young boy had been abandoned at age four and sent to work in a carpet factory, weaving rugs that would eventually end up in countries such as Canada and the United States.

Former AFP Secretary Tim J. Burchill, CFRE, Has Passed Away
(Feb. 26, 2007) Tim J. Burchill, CFRE, a past secretary and member of the board of directors of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and executive director of the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership at St. Mary's University of Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 20, 2007, at his home in Winona, Minn. He was 59.
