The Association of Professional Dream Makers
By David Love
To set the stage: David Love has been raising money since 1969 for a passionate and ongoing needy cause—the environment. Over the past 40+ years, Love has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for Mother Earth herself, working for 20 years with the World Wildlife Fund and many other environmental organizations. He continues to support Mother Nature with monthly donations to each of the environmental institutions he’s had his hand in over the years.
Aside from his adoration of the environment, Love has an enthusiasm for donor-center fundraising and even pioneered the concept. He relishes in learning new tips on the daily, and will pass them on to anyone who will listen. So listen up and take in the passion for fundraising that exudes from Love.
"So what do you do?"
Like you, I get asked this all the time. Depending on my mood, I have two answers.
If I'm feeling "environmental" (which is most of the time) I say, "I save life on Earth. What do you do?"
If I'm feeling like a fundraiser, I say, "I make dreams come true. What do you do?"
For this short article, I'm a dream maker.
I'm honoured to be recognized by my peers with the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter Lifetime Achievement Award. This award was made by a selection committee of my peers and then approved by the board of AFP Toronto, more of my peers. So I've been selected to the all-star team by a group of all-stars.
I've been raising money all my life and since its formation, the Association of Fundraising Professionals has been a source of inspiration. AFP gives me three things that make me better at what I do.
The first thing is that AFP continually runs fabulous educational sessions. I have learned a great deal from my mentors at AFP events: people like Steve Thomas, Ken Ramsay, Marnie Spears and others. And there are many new stars who teach me brand new things on an ongoing basis.
The second thing AFP gives me is a chance to network with my peers - to talk with colleagues, veterans and rookies, all faced with the same challenges and opportunities that I encounter every day.
Finally, AFP introduces me to the businesses out there which exist to make me a better dream maker.
I have the best job in the world. I spend my life helping people make their dreams come true: dreams of a just world, an equitable world, a green world.
And AFP helps me do my charmed job better.
I just wish they'd change the name to better reflect what we do: The APDM.
