AFP Leadership Society Member Meets with Fundraisers in Kenya
(Sept. 1, 2010) In August 2010, Barbara L. Ciconte, CFRE, Senior Vice President, Donor Strategies, Inc., a past AFP Board member and Vice Chair for Professional Advancement, traveled to Nairobi, Kenya and had the opportunity to meet with two leaders of the Kenya Association of Fundraising Professionals, Treasurer, Moses Chege, Regional Government Relations Officer, Sightsavers International, and Secretary, Joseph Wang’endo, Executive Director, Bloodlink Foundation. KAFP recently signed a strategic alliance agreement with AFP so that it can take advantage of key AFP membership benefits, including special trainings for East African fundraisers based on the AFP Essentials and Fundamentals curricula. The group discussed the need for education and training on ethical fundraising practices and the importance KAFP places on its members to become certified.
Barbara knows some of the challenges that resource mobilization officers (fundraisers) face in Kenya since she helped found a nonprofit organization in the U.S. in 2002 that assists a Kenyan NGO - Take Heart Association Project, Inc.(THAP) founded by Peter Mbogo Kamau in the mid-1990s. THAP's mission is to provide life-saving surgery, support, resources, and hope to families of underprivileged children in Kenya and East Africa suffering from congenital and rheumatic heart defects. As the President of the Board of Directors of THAP-USA, she witnessed, on her first trip to see THAP's program in action, just how important her involvement is at a special opening celebration of THAP's new Family Support Center on August 7. More than fifty people, most of them parents and children THAP assisted attended this memorable event. The Family Support Center offers a place for families and children who live outside of Nairobi to stay while receiving medical treatment and recovering from surgery.
