Join Melissa S Brown, former managing editor of Giving USA, to review key trends and what they mean for your fundraising program. Ms. Brown will draw on findings in Giving USA 2014. She will move beyond the data highlights to explore knowledge that appears in the text of this annual report and that is relevant for each type and size of nonprofit charity in the United States.

Hear from one of the experts about what Giving USA 2014 data mean and how to use them to plan for future fundraising. Melissa S. Brown, former managing editor of Giving USA, consults with nonprofit organizations across the country. In this session she will present practical tips for how to use the yearbook of philanthropy to strengthen your organization's fundraising. In a session tailored for advanced professionals of the AFP Greater Cincinnati chapter, she will go beyond the highlights of the report and drill down to look at what influences giving and look up to predict future trends. The interactive session will draw on the expertise in the room, so bring your questions, your stories of successes (or even less-than-successes) and join your peers to discuss what the data show and what they mean.

More about the speaker:

Melissa Brown first earned money as a technical writer at age 12.  A short essay on year-round school netted her $25 and a letter of commendation from Ronald Reagan, then governor of California, where she lived.

More recently, she has authored or edited 10 editions of Giving USA (a publication of Giving USA Foundation, numerous published articles, a handful of scholarly papers,and a training manual for The Fund Raising School, with Diane Gedeon-Martin of Write Source

While working at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University Melissa studied regional differences in giving, variations in gender and generational values and actions in giving and volunteering, and trends in fundraising results in nonprofit organizations.

Melissa began working in the nonprofit sector in 1989 at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. She has worked for the Homeless Initiative Program, Indiana University, and the national office of the Arthritis Foundation. She teaches successful proposal writing for The Fund Raising School. Her volunteer roles have included Big Sisters of Central Indiana and the International School of Indiana.

She holds a B.A. in political science from Reed College and a Master's degree in governmental administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Her spouse has studied philanthropy in Europe from the Greco-Roman era through 19th-century England.
