From the Desk of AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada Chair Shauna Klein, MA
September 14, 2010
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 553 Canadian members who have supported the 2010 Every Member Campaigns (EMC). This year's campaign is off to a stellar start, with almost $89,200 raised against the national goal of $106,000 (that's 84 percent!) as of Aug. 31. This is the first time that we have surpassed the two-thirds milestone this early in the campaign!
As you know, member support of the EMC helps to provide important educational opportunities for our colleagues and students through the funding of scholarships and bursaries to AFP events across Canada. It also facilitates ongoing career development opportunities by supporting Affiliate Libraries, Fundraising Days, conferences and other initiatives at the local level across the country. It enables junior colleagues to take advantage of the foundation's National Career Mentoring program, and the sector as a whole benefits from the foundation's support of numerous National Philanthropy Day® events.
Having such a strong start to the campaign year enables the foundation to better plan its support, and gives individual chapters the opportunity to keep on top of achieving their goals, helping to ensure they are eligible for the 25 percent of the funds they raise being allocated back to the chapter for local use.
There are many reasons for this very strong start in 2010: the growing number of dedicated monthly supporters (31 percent of total donors) in the Alpha Society; the addition of a very successful spring telephone fundraising campaign where pro bono telefundraising is being provided by Stratcom; and the growing use of the Every Member Campaign websites, provided pro bono by AKA New Media, all of which have had a positive impact.
Along with these very important factors, probably the most significant addition to the EMC strategy for 2010 is a focus on reaching 100 percent participation from all Canadian committee members, including the foundation board, the Canadian Council and Government Relations Committees. We all know the difference it makes in our own organizations when we can show existing and potential donors that the organization has the financial support of its volunteer leadership. The same is true for the AFP foundation. The more that members see the chapter leaders supporting the EMC, and the more the chapter publicizes their achievement, the greater an impact it will make on overall participation!
I would like to congratulate the following chapters who have reached their 100% Board Participation - Vancouver Island, Calgary & Area, Edmonton & Area, Regina, Manitoba, Ottawa, Golden Horseshoe, Greater Toronto, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. It will be a proud moment and a great accomplishment if all 15 chapters reach this goal by the end of the year.
Another achievement of Canadian members that has made us proud is those who joined the Omega Circle of Friends. This group of members has a desire to help advance ethical and effective fundraising and philanthropy for future generations with a minimum gift of $5,000. Please join me in welcoming the class of 2010.

One of the more significant items the foundation board members are currently working on is a new foundation case for support which is being led by AFP Greater Toronto Chapter Board Member, Zak Bailey, CFRE, who has graciously donated his time to help the foundation with this effort.
Please take a moment to show your support today by donating or making a pledge.

If you prefer to donate later in the year, send an email to Cynthia Quigley, director, AFP Canadian Services at email@example.com letting her know your intentions (gift amount and timing). This will allow us to include your support against your chapter goal.
Again, thank you for your continued support and participation.
