Nominations Open for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Board

As chair of the AFP Foundation’s Committee on Directorship, I invite your help in securing strong and effective leadership by participating in the Foundation’s board nominating process.  By nominating strong and proven leaders you can make a concrete contribution to the Foundation’s future success.

For terms beginning January 1, 2010, a Chair-Elect, Vice Chair (Development), and Secretary/Treasurer (one-year terms) and four directors (three-year terms) will be selected. Self-nominations are accepted.  When you nominate yourself or someone else, please indicate the position (Chair-Elect, officer, director).

Candidates for Directors

Candidates for Board service should meet as many as possible of the following criteria and competency needs:

  • Successful fundraising experience
  • Possess or have access to resources for philanthropy (eg, community foundations, foundations, AFP chapters, corporations and individuals)
  • Have access to specific trade/business segments
  • Diversity
  • Demonstrated history of philanthropic support of the AFP Foundation
  • Commitment to attend all meetings of the Board of Directors
  • Commitment to fulfill Board member “Expectations and Responsibilities” (see separate document)

Candidates for Officers


For officers, the Board criteria and competency needs also apply, along with the ability to lead and motivate, and a dedication to our ideals, purpose and needs.

Candidates serving in an officer position should meet as many as possible of the following criteria and competency needs:

  • Ability to lead and motivate
  • Ability to affect collaboration
  • Dedication to AFP and AFPF ideals, purpose and needs
  • Demonstrated service to AFP/AFP Foundation
  • Active Board participation
  • Demonstrated diplomacy
  • Respected by colleagues
  • Achieved success with assignments
  • Effective working relationships with staff, AFP members and chapters

Candidate for Chair-elect


Candidates nominated for Chair-Elect will be required to answer a uniform set of questions. As candidates are nominated, the questionnaire will be sent to them directly.  The candidate’s answers will be submitted to the Committee on Directorship for its review and consideration.  When nominating a candidate for Chair-Elect, it is important that you inform the candidate of this requirement. Chair-Elect nomination forms are due by July 10, 2009, and are to be submitted to AFP International Headquarters, attention Rebecca Knight.

The deadline for submitting officer and director nominations is July 24, 2009, and are to be submitted to AFP International Headquarters, attention Rebecca Knight, by faxing to 703-836-5624, or by emailing to rknight@afpnet.org
