AFP Foundation for Philanthropy-Canada Provides Programming Beyond the Association

August 1, 2012

The work of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy - Canada provides programs that often go beyond what the association can support, making additional services available for fundraisers across Canada in the areas of education, scholarships, mentoring, translation and research.

The increasing growth of the profession and the increasing importance of fundraising within the philanthropic process means extraordinary demand for fundraisers and their services. The foundation, formed in 1998, works with AFP to complement and strengthen AFP’s work in several key areas, helping fundraisers serve their communities more effectively and efficiently.

“Fundraisers make philanthropy happen by bringing together charities, donors and volunteers,” said Marnie Hill, CFRE, executive director of the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation in Victoria and chair of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy - Canada. “But that can't happen without the proper training, education and resources. The foundation is proud to provide funding for programs that allow fundraisers across Canada to do their jobs better.

Direct Support of Programs

Some of the funds generated by the foundation are granted directly to chapters to help support their programming. Other funds are used to support national initiatives that benefit fundraisers across Canada, including:

  • Education – sponsorship of affordable, local, practical seminars
  • Scholarships – financial support for those without other resources
  • Mentoring – linking those willing to learn with those willing to share
  • Translation – ensuring high quality educational material in both official languages
  • Research – staying on top of trends and issues facing fundraisers today

“One of the nice things about supporting the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy - Canada is that you see the impact of your gifts,” said Mark Climie, CFRE, president of Wyers Direct in Toronto and co-chair of the foundation’s Every Member Campaign (EMC).

Just some of the programs and activities the foundation has supported recently include books for affiliate libraries in various communities across Canada, including Victoria and Calgary. In addition, the foundation has provided numerous scholarships and bursaries for a variety of fundraising conferences and meetings, including the Western Fundraisers Conference in Calgary, the Congress in Toronto, the Atlantic Fundraising Conference in Halifax and the Essentials series in Winnipeg.

“The money not only supports local efforts directly, but items like research and scholarships that help us all throughout the country. We truly are helping ourselves, the profession and our communities when we support the foundation,” said Scott Decksheimer, principal consultant with Nine Lions Development Consulting in Calgary and co-chair of the EMC.

Setting an Example

Shauna Klein, MA, national manager, marketing and development for Girl Guides of Canada in Toronto and chair-elect of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy - Canada, also sees another important reason for giving: setting a good example for donors. “If we’re going to convince donors to give, we have to serve as role models. Donors are looking for things like effectiveness and accountability, and by demonstrating those through giving to and supporting our professional foundation, we make our case for giving that much stronger.”

The foundation’s EMC has been a great example, consistently exceeding its goal every year. Under the EMC, the foundation allocates back to a chapter's geographic area 25 percent of all the funds it raises. Chapters can then use this money for local educational programs and scholarships.

Currently, phase one of the telemarketing portion of the EMC is underway, with Vancouver and Toronto-based Strategic Communications providing pro bono telemarketing services.

Members can also contribute online to the EMC.

Many Ways to Give

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy - Canada offers members numerous ways to support the profession. The Alpha Society is a monthly sustained giving program that allows donors to stretch their giving over the entire year. There are also several different planned giving and endowment options. Donors of deferred gifts totaling $5,000 or more are recognized as Omega Circle members. Gifts can be made through the foundation in a number of forms, including bequests, gift annuities and trusts.
