Spring 2011 Public Policy Update
The Spring 2011 Public Policy Update contains information about the Obama Administration’s proposal to cap itemized deductions (including charitable deductions) to pay for a 3-year Alternative Minimum Tax fix. The update also covers New York ethics education legislation affecting fundraisers and bills in Oregon and North Carolina that penalize charities that exceed certain administrative cost ratios. There also is an update on Canadian legislative issues in the wake of the dissolution of Parliament. AFP Canadian members are encouraged to meet with local Members of Parliament, Senators, candidates and/or their staffs at this time, and talking points are provided.

Summer 2010 Public Policy Update
The Summer 2010 Public Policy Update contains information about the stalled extension of the IRA Rollover provision and a description of efforts in the U.S. and Canada to cap nonprofit compensation, including a CALL TO ACTION for AFP Canadian members. The update also covers the proposal in New York's recently enacted budget that caps the charitable deduction for wealthy New York citizens with a CALL TO ACTION for AFP NY members.  In addition, we provide some information about the IRS' one-time filing relief program for small charities. The update also covers AFP's 2010 pre-budget consultation submission in Canada and its submission regarding recent efforts to update British Columbia's Society Act.

Winter 2010 Public Policy Update
The Winter 2010 Public Policy Update contains information on the proposed caps on the charitable deduction, the IRA Rollover provision, the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency and the charitable mileage deduction. It also includes state issues in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New York. The update also covers the Canadian government’s recognition of National Philanthropy Day and the elimination of the disbursement quota. 

Summer 2009 Public Policy Update
The Summer 2009 Public Policy Update includes an update on proposals that would limit charitable deductions to pay for healthcare reforms and a call to action for AFP members. In addition, the update contains the latest news on the final version of the Canada Revenue Agency’s fundraising policy, National Philanthropy Day legislation, the Canada Not-For-Profit Corporations Act and AFP’s efforts to increase the provincial portion of the non-refundable tax credit in Ontario.  

Spring 2009 Public Policy Update

The September-October 2008 Public Policy Update includes a story about the recently passed IRA Rollover provision extension.  In addition, the update contains the latest news on the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications telemarketing rules (with a call for member action), a status report on the National Philanthropy Day legislation, a brief update on the Canada Revenue Agency’s proposed telemarketing rules and a story about the AFP Vancouver Chapter’s pre-budget consultation submission (with a call to action for AFP’s British Columbia area members).  :   

Summer 2008 Public Policy Update
The summer 2008 public policy update includes a status report on the IRA Rollover provision, comments submitted by AFP to the IRS regarding the Form 990 instructions, new mileage rate legislation and the withdrawal of the California diversity bill. January/February 2008 Public Policy Update
AFP’s 2008 January-February Public Policy Update includes an update on the IRA Rollover provision, new information on the IRS’ Form 990 redesign and a summary of recent House hearings on Veterans’ Charities. The update also includes stories about the creation of a panel to support a government-recognized National Philanthropy Day in Canada before the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology and the CRTC’s efforts to finalize its telemarketing rules.
