Pay to College Fundraisers, Staff Shows Strong Growth
(July 21, 2008) Salaries of fundraisers at U.S. colleges and universities have seen strong growth in recent years, according to a survey conducted by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
The CASE Advancement Compensation Survey, released this month, reports that those who work in development earn an average salary of $68,241, an 8 percent increase from 2005. Those working in “advancement services,” supporting fundraising activities through database management and other behind-the-scenes functions, have seen a 12 percent increase from 2005, now earning $64,445 on average, the study shows.
The boost in salaries for fundraisers in higher education mirrors the growth across sectors shown in AFP’s Compensation and Benefits Study conducted yearly. The AFP survey of nonprofit fundraisers at all levels (and nonprofit CEOs) shows that salaries in the profession also increased 8 percent from $67,181 in 2005 to $72,683 in 2007.
AFP’s study measures salaries of fundraisers in the entire education sector and does not break responses down for colleges and universities. The education sector showed a 9 percent increase from 2005 to 2007, rising from $68,492 to $74,648 in AFP’s study, again similar to the CASE results.
Prevailing Pay Gap for Women
The CASE survey of colleges also shows that women continue to trail men significantly in pay, earning on average $62,728 while men earned $80,988. This trend is not unique to higher education. The full set of respondents to AFP’s survey of 2007 figures (which represents all sectors and includes CEOs) shows men making $88,071 on average and women just $66,646.The CASE salary report appeared in the July/August 2008 issue of the association’s magazine, Currents, and is available online only to CASE members.
