Canada Revenue Agency Provides 2004 'Annual Report'
(July 25, 2005) The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the agency most responsible for oversight of the charitable sector, has released facts and figures about its activities in 2004.
Last year, the Charities Directorate of the CRA:
- registered 2,592 charities (including both new registrations and re-registrations)
- received 124,705 phone inquiries on its toll-free line--37,860 of these were handled at the 'tier two' level, which deals with questions of a technical nature
- received 10,443 written requests for services from registered charities
- received 3,043 new applications for registration as a charity
- received 445 applications for re-registration as a charity
- sent 482 letters to applicants advising them of the CRA's tentative view that they would not qualify for registration
- formally denied 19 applications
- revoked the charitable status of 709 organizations at their request
- revoked 1,261 registered charities because they did not file their annual registered charity information return in the six-month period after their fiscal year-end
- revoked eight registered charities for cause (e.g., their activities did not comply with the requirements of the Income Tax Act)
- completed 367 audits of registered charities as a result of public complaints, random selection, or based on annual information returns (this number is based on the CRA's fiscal year from April 2004 to March 2005).
In addition, the CRA has reported that it will be distributing an educational pamphlet during the summer explaining how the March 2004 federal budget will affect charities. The material will outline changes related to a variety of areas, including receipts, appeals and the disbursement quota.
