Open Letter to all AFP Members in Canada - Re: The 2016 Budget and Charitable Giving

Dear AFP Members,

Once again, you can help ensure that the 2016 budget includes important measures to stimulate additional charitable giving by communicating with your local Member of Parliament (MP), regardless of which political party he or she represents.

As many MPs were elected for the first time in the recent election, it is important to update them on the measures in the 2015 budget on the removal of the capital gains tax on gifts of private company shares and real estate which has not yet been passed into law. It is also important for all MPs to be aware of the potential disadvantages to charitable giving of the proposal to treat stock option benefits as ordinary income rather than as a capital gain.

Attached is a template of a letter which has been be mailed to all MPs in their constituency offices, together with two articles published in the Globe and Mail – one on August 27, and the other on December 14, 2015.

Communication of your support for these measures to your local MP regardless of which party she or he represents, would be helpful. As you know, MPs listen to business and community leaders who live in their riding and who are involved in one or more local charities.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me via email or telephone call.

I wish you and your family a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

Best personal regards.

Yours sincerely,

Donald Johnson
