CRA Information Return Packages Mailed Late, New Re-Registration Process
(Sept. 11, 2006) The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has reported that, due to technical problems, there will be delays in the mailing of information return packages to registered charities with fiscal periods that ended in July and August of 2006.
The mailings are expected to be completed by the end of September. Organizations affected by this delay and that have not received their Registered Charities Information Return package by the middle of October 2006 should call the CRA at (800) 267-2384.
New Re-registration Process
In other CRA news, the agency has developed a new process for organizations whose charitable status was revoked for failure to file an annual return and want to re-register as a charity.
As of Sept. 1, 2006, organizations re-applying for registration as Canadian charities may be subject to a penalty depending upon their taxation year and when they received their Notice of Intention to Revoke:
- Situation 1 - Taxation year that pertains to the organization’s revocation began on or before March 22, 2004, or received a Notice of Intent to Revoke before June 13, 2005.
- Situation 2 - Taxation year that pertains to the organization’s revocation began on or before March 22, 2004, and received a Notice of Intent to Revoke on or after June 13, 2005.
- Situation 3 - Taxation year that pertains to the organization’s revocation began after March 22, 2004 and received a Notice of Intent to Revoke on or after June 13, 2005.
