Doorley and Schick Earn ACFRE Credential

Mary Doorley, of Melrose, Mass., and Marcella Moyer Schick, of Allentown, Pa., are the 86th and 87th fundraisers to earn the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) credential.
The ACFRE is the highest professional certification awarded by AFP and is available only to senior-level fundraisers who have worked in the profession for 10 or more years.
Doorley has been a fundraising professional for more than twenty years and currently manages the development program for Reach Out and Read, a national pediatric literacy program. She earned a bachelor’s degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a master’s degree from Regis College in Weston, Mass. She is a lecturer in the fundraising management program at Boston University.
“For me, earning the ACFRE was important not only personally, as it required me to think strategically and thoughtfully about the profession and my role in it, but also because ACFRE certification strengthens fundraising and how people view development,” said Doorley. “I’m grateful to AFP for managing the program, and the encouragement and feedback I received during the process was invaluable and is something I’ll use for the rest of my career.”
Schick has worked in the field of development for over 25 years and is currently vice president, institutional advancement, for Phoebe Ministries, a multi-service organization based in Allentown, Pa., specializing in healthcare, retirement communities and support services for older adults throughout eastern and central Pennsylvania. She joined Phoebe in 1997 and is responsible for all aspects of fundraising, community relations and corporate marketing.
“The ACFRE process has afforded me extensive opportunities to further my knowledge and skills in fundraising ethics, leadership and best practices,” said Schick. “For those working in nonprofit fundraising, the ACFRE has the power to enhance our credibility and professionalism and to in turn benefit the causes for which we work. I encourage all AFP members to work first for the CFRE and then to set attainment of the ACFRE as a personal professional goal.”
The ACFRE program is the most rigorous certification process available to professional fundraisers. The ACFRE Certification Board, chaired by Karla A. Williams, ACFRE, oversees the ACFRE candidate review process, which includes:
• a comprehensive application, detailing achievements in practice, education, publishing, teaching and service to the profession;
• a written examination that measures a candidate’s knowledge of fundraising as well as the philosophical, ethical and social aspects of philanthropy;
• a portfolio representing the candidate’s body of professional work; and
• an oral peer review in which the candidate must articulate a mastery of advanced-level knowledge in fundraising management, leadership and ethics.
Doorley and Schick will be honored for their achievements during AFP’s 47th International Conference on Fundraising in Baltimore, Md., in April 2010.
