Join AFP, 15 Founding Partners and Countless Nonprofits in Celebrating GivingTuesday
November 6, 2013
AFP is a founding partner of GivingTuesday, a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday, to be celebrated this year on Dec. 3, provides an opportunity for charities, companies and individuals to join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others. Initiated in Canada by CanadaHelps and GIV3, this year’s inaugural GivingTuesday in Canada is also backed by 15 founding partners, including AFP
The founding partners are not in this alone—a growing list of partners are building campaigns around the movement that offer more than an encouraged giving season. GivingTuesday partners are charities, social enterprises, companies or brands that are committed to helping the Canadian charitable sector. No catch, no cost—just action. All you have to do is commit to an action that benefits a registered Canadian charity of nonprofit.
One founding partner, the Mobile Giving Foundation Canada (MGFC), is offering the use of a single keyword/short code for free to pre-certified MGFC charities that partner with GivingTuesday. “Our GivingTuesday goal is to mobilize giving back by leveraging the ubiquity of mobile phones,” said Katherine Winchester of MGFC.
The MGFC “Give back for GivingTuesday” text-to-donate campaigns will be active, without any transaction or program maintenance fees for charities, between Nov. 5 and Dec. 31, 2013, so participating charities will have almost two months to engage with new donors and raise funds through text messages. Interested Canadian charities can register for a free GivingTuesday partnership and must be certified with MGFC ($350 one-time fee applies) to activate their free text-to-donate campaign before Nov. 8, 2013.
For AFP, GivingTuesday is the perfect complement for National Philanthropy Day® and the giving season. “National Philanthropy Day® is a day to celebrate philanthropy and remember all of the extraordinary things people do to improve their communities, and GivingTuesday is a day to give and support the charities and causes we believe in,” said Andrew Watt, FInstF, president and CEO of AFP.
Join AFP and the nonprofits dedicated to making the inaugural GivingTuesday in Canada a success. Spread the word on Facebook and Twitter using #GivingTuesdayCa, check out the ideas for individuals (and families!) on the GivingTuesday.ca website, seek out a charity to donate to, spend some time volunteering, or even become an honored partner. This day promises to be monumental—the inaugural event in the US in 2012 brought together over 2,500 charities, volunteer organization, corporations and foundations, and recorded a 50 percent or more increase in online donations—all in one day. Commit to Canada’s GivingTuesday and save the date for Dec. 3, 2013!
