AFP President Andrew Watt Named to NonProfit Times’ Most Influential List

August 1, 2013

The NonProfit Times has named Andrew Watt, FInstF, president and CEO of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), one of the 50 most influential people in the charitable sector.

“The Power and Influence Top 50” is selected by a combination of NonProfit Times’ staff and members of the nonprofit community.

The Times’ wrote of Watt: “Watt brings an international view to philanthropy, especially when lobbying and explaining to cloistered members of Congress that government is hounding poor people for nickels and dimes and not focusing on real issues of growing a civil society.”

As the co-founder and chair of the Charitable Giving Coalition, AFP has been one of the leaders in defending the charitable deduction and other giving incentives. But AFP’s message has been far broader than just focusing on the deduction. Watt has been making the case that government, the for-profit sector, charities and the public need to come together to discuss how to reignite philanthropy and find ways to increase charitable engagement around the world.

“Being named to the list isn’t about one person, but rather is a reflection of the important work the entire fundraising community is performing in educating our elected officials about the importance of philanthropy and civil society,” said Watt. “AFP represents the full spectrum of our community: from the smallest grass-roots charities to the largest non-governmental organizations across the globe. This perspective enriches and informs the critical debates we're having today in order to achieve a just and fair society for the future. I'm delighted that we have achieved this recognition.”

Other figures in The NonProfit Times’ list include:

  • Diane Aviv, President and CEO, Independent Sector
  • Tim Delaney, President and CEO, National Council of Nonprofits
  • John H. Graham IV, President and CEO, ASAE/The Center for Association Leadership
  • Eugene R. Tempel, Ph.D., Dean, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy

This year's honorees have been invited to attend a gala at The National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 19.
