Grammy Award Winning Musician, Education Activist, Movie Co-Producer and…AFP International Conference Speaker!
January 29, 2013
John Legend may have won nine Grammy Awards for his musical talent, and he may have just co-produced a documentary with Brad Pitt, Russell Simmons and Danny Glover, but he’s much more than a musically and film-inclined celebrity. Legend is an education activist and created the Show Me Campaign, a nonprofit organization that fights for education reform in the United States and works with Millennium Promise to provide clean water, health care, education and more for Africa.
Legend has often spoken of his fight for equality in education in speeches at Penn State University, Loyola Marymount University, University of Pennsylvania, and more. In today’s society, having a quality education is considered a privilege, not a right, he says. At the 2013 AFP International Conference on Fundraising in San Diego, you can expect Legend to elaborate on his position that equal access to quality education is the civil rights issue of our time.
During his presentation, Legend will talk about philanthropy, fundraising, activism and involvement through his perspective of starting the Show Me Campaign. While addressing the students, staff, faculty, alumni and State College community at Penn State University on Jan. 14, Legend also encouraged the seniors to apply for Teach for America, where he has been a board member since 2012. To further his stance on education equality, he also serves on the boards of The Education Equality Project, the Harlem Village-Academies, and Stand for Children.
Legend’s passionate activism isn’t confined to educational institutes, as his experiences and inspirational efforts will be heard at AFP’s International conference in April. Recently, Legend also joined the ranks of other powerful musicians to celebrate President Obama’s Inauguration in Washington D.C. Legend wowed the crowd with popular songs such as “Green Light,” “Ordinary People” and his current, Grammy-nominated single “Tonight.”
On Sunday, April 7, Legend will take the stage at the 2013 AFP International Conference on Fundraising in San Diego. Join him as he speaks on pressing issues in the world of education and philanthropy followed by a Q&A session that promises to resonate. In closing, Legend will take a seat at the piano and play a selection of his songs.
Don’t miss “An Afternoon with John Legend” and the chance to be inspired and serenaded by an education activist and Grammy Award winning musician!
