AFP, Mackenzie Investments Partner to Strengthen Training and Education for Charities, Fundraisers

November 20, 2012

Canadian fundraising professionals and the charitable sector are about to receive a major boost in training and development, thanks to an initiative funded by Mackenzie Investments, one of Canada’s leading investment management firms, in partnership with AFP.

The partnership will offer in-depth education, training and networking activities for Canadian-based nonprofit leaders and professional fundraisers. Implementation of the program will be led by AFP and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy Canada, the largest network of fundraisers in the world that helps raise more than $100 billion in charitable contributions across North America every year.

One of the goals of the partnership is to assist fundraisers and nonprofit leaders in innovating, competing more strategically, and rethinking best practices by providing opportunities to learn from respected fundraisers, develop key professional skills and share experiences with colleagues.

"At Mackenzie Investments we are inspired to make a difference by supporting endeavors strengthening the charitable sector,” said Brad Offman, MA, MBA, CFRE, Vice President, Strategic Philanthropy. “We believe in building partnerships with professional fundraisers in appreciation of the contribution they make to the health and well-being of their communities.”

Mackenzie Investments will help champion education by funding a new Canadian Web Conference series for AFP’s 16 chapters across the country. The series will foster dialogue and increase awareness of the complexity of issues facing fundraising and the sector, provide tools to deal with sector issues and create stronger advocates for the profession and the sector.

Another facet of the partnership is the Mackenzie Investments National Scholarship Program. The program will focus on providing opportunities for individuals who do not have the financial resources to participate in educational gatherings so they can access the skills and knowledge to better practice ethical fundraising and demonstrate philanthropic leadership.

"This investment from Mackenzie Investments will help the fundraising professional prepare for new conversations about best practices in Canada,” said Pati Greenwood, CFRE, chair, AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada. “In fact, this project is breaking new ground in the sector, and we expect that it will offer some practical insights and strategies for professional fundraisers that are interested in taking their career and their organization to the next level.
