AFP Launches Tool to Help Fundraisers Assess, Strengthen Ethical Performance

September 27, 2011

AFP is proud to launch an online survey tool that allows fundraisers to assess their individual ethical performance and strengthen ethical practice.

The AFP Ethics Assessment Inventory™ (EAI) allows association members to examine the alignment between their personal ethical performance, that of the organizations in which they work and their peers within AFP. Ultimately, this will help assure that a fundraiser is treating donors with utmost respect and care, building and fostering strong relationships and maximizing the effectiveness of donations.

The EAI assesses the ethical performance of AFP fundraising practitioners along six areas of ethical practice: Accountable, Adherent/Observant, Courageous, Integrity, Transparent and Trustworthy. Fundraisers are asked to rate a variety of ethical attributes about themselves, including how well they keep current with fundraising best practices, make decisions based on the best interests of their organization and its donors, foster transparency and adhere to the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards, and more.

The EAI is based on research conducted by the Center for Ethical Business Cultures (CEBC) at the University of St. Thomas – Minnesota and with input from nearly 2,000 AFP members. The AFP Ethics Committee guided the development of the tool. The survey is voluntary and the results are anonymous.

“I am very excited that AFP now offers a personal ethics assessment tool to its members,” said Andrew Watt, FInstF, president and CEO of AFP. “AFP was founded in 1960 based on an ethical code, and today every member of AFP signs adherence to its standards. Ethical dilemmas are a very real part of a fundraiser’s job and this tool helps them assess, and thereby better equip, themselves for today’s ethical challenges.”

Creation of the EAI was funded by the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy though the generous support of its 50th Anniversary Campaign by several individuals and AFP chapters.
