Alert: Possible Summer Strike Vote from Canada Post
August 14, 2018
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post management have until September 9 to reach an agreement for a new contract affecting more than 50,000 Canada Post employees. If no deal is reached by the deadline, a strike or lockout will be possible by late September.
A postal disruption in fall would have a big impact on nonprofit organizations who rely on mail for donations. It’s been estimated that some $250 million dollars in charitable revenue comes through the mail annually. For most charities the bulk of this revenue comes in the fall.
“We are advising our clients to be prepared to beef up their digital fundraising in the fall, but in the meantime, we are watching the negotiations carefully and will build strategies as needed” says Paula Attfield, President of Stephen Thomas Ltd. and chair-elect of the AFP Canada Board. “We urge both sides in these negotiations to find a speedy resolution. I encourage all charities, especially fundraising staff, to also stay informed so that alternate communication channels can be planned for if needed."
