Diversity and Inclusion in Fundraising: On the Road to Reconciliation

October 9, 2017

On September 26, AFP Vancouver members gathered at the University of the Fraser Valley’s (UFV) Chilliwack campus for its  “AFP In Your Neighbourhood” Series to take a step on the road to reconciliation.

Focused on the topic of philanthropy and reconciliation, panelists Dr. Jeffrey Schiffer, program director, Office of Indigenization, Justice Institute of British Columbia and The Honourable Dr. Steven Point, former lieutenant governor of British Columbia, engaged fundraising leaders in exploring how the nonprofit sector can participate in reconciliation and how to integrate Indigenous dialogue into projects that promote reconciliation.

The event, held at UFV’s Gathering Place on the traditional and unceded territory of the Stó:lō people, is part of AFP Vancouver Chapter’s larger vision to embed diversity and inclusion in the fundraising profession, increase charities’ impact and donor engagement, and to ensure that the fundraising profession reflects the communities it serves.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada published its landmark report, “Honouring the Truth, Reconciling the Future,” offering 94 calls to action, a general handbook on how to achieve reconciliation within Canada. The AFP Vancouver Chapter continues to invest resources to provide cultural support for its membership, to help bridge the gap between the nonprofit sector and Indigenous peoples, and to help facilitate a path toward reconciliation.

“As Canada embarks on a path of reconciliation, AFP Vancouver remains committed to forging respectful, meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous communities throughout the Lower Mainland,” notes Christopher Duffin, Chair of AFP Vancouver’s Fraser Valley Committee.

AFP Vancouver will also be holding a professional development session on reconciliation at the upcoming National Philanthropy Day Summit in Vancouver on November 16.
