Help Make the Fundraising Profession More Diverse and Vibrant!

June 13, 2017

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada is proud to have completed its recent two-year Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy program in Ontario. Graduating 61 Fellows is an exciting and significant first step in changing the diversity of the fundraising profession in Ontario. And the impact of the Fellowship is already being felt:

"As a result of the Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy, I gained the skills and confidence I needed to step up and play an important leadership role in my organization. My recent achievements include securing multi-year government grants worth over $1.6 million and leading two major IT projects that are laying the foundation for organizational growth." - Tania Cheng, 2015 Fellow

Now we want to expand this program and its impact across the country!

The Fellows and Mentors are so supportive of the program that they have launched a peer-to-peer campaign. Now YOU can play a key role in enhancing the reach of our profession, bringing new voices into fundraising and changing the professional lives of people who are going to help change the world!

"As a young, nonprofit professional, I aspire to redefine our culture of philanthropy. Diversity, inclusion and leadership have long been not only an interest of mine, but deeply engrained in my identity through my lived experience as a woman of colour. Participating in the AFP Fellowship has further allowed me to maintain my commitment to promoting, embracing and mainstreaming inclusion. This is an opportunity I strongly believe others of different faces, contributions and voices of our diverse country deserve to have. Gerri Lutaaya, 2016 Fellow

2) Share the campaign with your network

Once you've donated, please help spread the word with your network. If you are sharing on social media, the hashtag for the campaign is #TransformPhilanthropy.

3) Start a conversation about inclusion in your organization or AFP chapter

The goal of the Fellowship program is to increase diversity and enhance inclusion in our profession, and often this starts with courageous conversations.

About the Program

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada's vision is to embed diversity and inclusion in the fundraising profession and increase charities' impact and donor engagement. With your help, we will help grow philanthropy and ensure the fundraising profession reflects the communities we serve.

The Foundation does this through your support of the Diverse Communities Scholarship Program and the Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy Program. The Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy program has successfully supported more than 60 emerging diverse leaders in Ontario gain access to training and education toward successful and meaningful careers in fundraising.

How the Fellowship transforms philanthropy

  • Recruiting diverse fellows from various regions to champion access and inclusion, and engaging members of their community in AFP and the fundraising profession
  • Increasing access to philanthropic knowledge and networks through AFP membership and educational resources
  • Filling the leadership gap that looms in the charitable sector with competent and diverse professionals who understand fundraising

Expanding and strengthening the Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy is our next step in changing the faces of philanthropy.

"When today's senior leaders retire, the next generation of Chairs, CEOs and Executive Directors will have the knowledge and networks to build diversity and philanthropy into the very DNA of their organizations. It will be embedded into every functional unit. Over time this process will lead to a NEW STANDARD for the sector as a whole, as DIVERSE new leaders with STRONG KNOWLEDGE and connections move into SENIOR LEADERSHIP positions within the AFP volunteer structure, within their own organizations, and throughout the fundraising profession." - Emma Lewzey, CFRE & Krishan Mehta, Ph.D.,
Fellowship in Inclusion & Philanthropy Co-Chairs
