Martha H. Schumacher Earns Highest Professional Fundraising Credential from AFP

February 2, 2010

AFP has awarded its highest professional certification, the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), to Martha H. Schumacher in Washington, D.C.

Available only to senior-level fundraisers who have worked in the profession for 10 or more years, the ACFRE is a distinguished achievement earned by only 88 professionals since the inception of the program in 1992.

The ACFRE program is the most rigorous certification process available to professional fundraisers. The process includes a comprehensive application, detailing achievements in practice, education, publishing, teaching, and service to the profession; a written examination that measures a candidate's knowledge of fundraising as well as the philosophical, ethical, and social aspects of philanthropy; a portfolio representing the candidate's body of professional work; and an oral peer review in which the candidate must articulate a mastery of advanced-level knowledge in fundraising management, leadership, and ethics.

The ACFRE Certification Board of AFP, chaired by Karla A. Williams, ACFRE, oversees the ACFRE candidate review process. Ms. Schumacher will be honored for her achievement during AFP's 47th International Conference on Fundraising in Baltimore in April 2010.

Ms. Schumacher is President of Hazen Inc., a comprehensive philanthropy consulting firm specializing in major gifts training, campaign counsel, strategic development planning, and board and staff development. Ms. Schumacher's current and recent clients include the American Red Cross, National Aquariums in Washington, DC and Baltimore, Epilepsy Foundation, Center for Biological Diversity, Safe Kids Worldwide and Capital City Public Charter School.

Ms. Schumacher serves on the AFP Board of Directors and chairs the Communications & Marketing Committee. She also serves on the AFP Strategic Planning and Government Relations Committees, and the AFP Foundation Committee on Directorship. Ms. Schumacher is a proud member of the Washington DC Metro Area (AFP/DC) and Maryland chapters. She is a past president of AFP/DC and that chapter recently named her Outstanding Professional Fundraiser of the Year.

Ms. Schumacher is faculty for the Center for Nonprofit Advancement's Learning and Leadership Institute and serves on the Center's Resource Development Committee. She is the Chief Advisor and on-air individual giving expert for Connections, the Center's new nonprofit programming partnership with DCTV. Ms. Schumacher is also an active member of the Green Team, the Institute for Conservation Leadership's fundraising committee.
