Teach! The AFP Faculty Training Academy and FTA Graduate Summit
December 1, 2009
AFP is proud to offer the sixth Faculty Training Academy as a pre-conference workshop at the 47th AFP International Conference on Fundraising, April 11- 14, 2010, in Baltimore. We are also excited to introduce the new Faculty Training Academy Graduate Summit!
The Faculty Training Academy, a day and a half program (April 10 and 11), will teach participants how to be better educators, mentors and presenters and will focus on adult learning concepts and teaching techniques, including learning styles and training methods, lesson plans, ice breakers and energizers, forms of delivery, handling questions, giving directions, facilitating discussions and working with difficult trainees. On the second day, each participant will present a 10-minute training session demonstrating new training techniques learned in the academy. In addition to the day and a half training, participants will be asked to complete approximately six hours of pre-work prior to the event.
Registrants must demonstrate their understanding of appropriate teaching techniques and adult learning methodology and be able to deliver high quality, interesting and thought-provoking presentations. Eligible registrants must meet the following criteria upon registering for the academy:
- Possess extensive successful experience in the nonprofit field and be thoroughly knowledgeable about the fundraising process
- Have completed a minimum of 45 contact hours of continuing education in fundraising within the last three years
- Demonstrate success in teaching adult students during the three years prior to applying to the academy
- Successfully evaluated and/or supervised peers
- Have the endorsement of their local AFP chapter's vice president for education and professional development or chapter president
- Agree to teach at least three AFP educational courses or programs (CFRE Review Course and/or the new Fundamentals of Fundraising course) within the two-year period following the Faculty Training Academy
- Work currently in the fundraising profession
Individuals successfully completing the program will form a group of highly qualified teachers who will take leadership positions in AFP professional education programs, including the CFRE Review Course and new Fundamentals of Fundraising course and are encouraged to provide programming and training assistance to any AFP chapter.
To achieve the goal of providing trainees with an enriching interactive experience, registration will be limited to 40 participants. Registration is on a first come first served basis for those who meet the eligibility requirements.
The Faculty Training Academy Graduate Summit
This hands-on, interactive workshop (held on April 11) is designed for all FTA graduates and anyone interested in teaching AFP courses in the future. During this workshop, participants will learn innovative tips for teaching the specific topics contained within the CFRE Review Course and the new AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course. Participants will be able to share learning methods that they have successfully implemented in teaching fundraising courses, learn how they can support each other, and learn how AFP can support them in their teaching of AFP courses. Participants will learn new techniques for using simulations, games, role-plays, case studies, lectures, exercises, skills demonstrations, assessments and quizzes for each topic presented in AFP's two courses.
Pre-work: Participants should come prepared to describe and demonstrate the most innovative ideas that they have successfully implemented for the topics they have taught in the CFRE Review Course, the AFP First Course, and the Essentials of Fundraising Course. If any props or handouts are needed to demonstrate these innovative learning methods, participants are encouraged to bring them to the workshop.
Both the Faculty Training Academy (workshop A3) and the FTA Graduate Summit (workshop A6) will be facilitated by Dr. B.J. Bischoff, Bischoff Performance Improvement Consulting, Indianapolis, Ind. These are just two of the seven intensive workshops being offered at the 47th AFP International Conference on Fundraising in Baltimore.
