Michael Slaymaker, New York City and Orange County Chapters Receive Marion, Stephens Awards

Members and chapters are the heart of AFP, and we are always pleased to recognize those who have contributed greatly to the association through their efforts, leadership, commitment and innovation.
AFP will be highlighting the work of our awards honorees later this year, with each receiving an in-depth article about their work and contributions to the fundraising comunity. For now, we are pleased to announce our honorees, all of whom will be recognized at this year’s Leadership Academy.
Barbara Marion Award for Outstanding Leadership to AFP
Barbara Marion, ACFRE, was the first woman to chair both AFP and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy board of directors and provided leadership and service to the association in countless areas. This award, named in her honor, recognizes an AFP member who demonstrates outstanding leadership and service to the association and/or its related entities, such as the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy.
Michael Slaymaker, this year’s recipient of the Barbara Marion Award, has more than 25 years of experience in fundraising and nonprofit administration, and has been a member since 1988.
Slaymaker is currently vice president of grants & planned giving for Easter Seals Florida, but also serves as chapter administrator for the Central Florida Chapter. He’s been actively involved in so many different facets of AFP, from presenting and teaching to mentoring and outreach. He has helped the chapter achieve the Friends of Diversity Designation and Ten Star Gold status, and serves as the chapter’s mentor for incoming presidents, meeting with them regularly. In 2011, he was honored as the Outstanding Fundraising Professional for Central Florida.
In March of 2000, Slaymaker founded the Orlando Anti-Discrimination Ordinance Committee (OADO). This highly successful bipartisan group of volunteers has written and passed 16 different ordinances and policies to secure protection for Central Florida residents from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. He is heard on NPR and is not only active in AFP, but throughout the community as a speaker on fundraising, discrimination, and LGBTQ rights.
Charles R. Stephens Excellence in Diversity Award
The Charles R. Stephens Excellence in Diversity Award is named for the 1992-1993 AFP Chair Charles R. Stephens, CFRE and recognizes his efforts in bringing AFP’s diversity programs to the forefront. This award honors the year’s most outstanding demonstration by AFP chapters of leadership, creativity and initiative in building diversity in membership or programming. An award can be given in each chapter-size category.
This year, our two honorees are the AFP, Orange County Chapter (251 – 400 members) and the AFP New York City Chapter (401+ members).
Five years ago, the Orange County Chapter board adopted goals of diversity and inclusion with a commitment to increase representation of nonprofit professionals serving the diverse needs of the county. One of the key strategies was the establishment and implementation of the Mosaic Scholarship Fund, which now has provided 17 nonprofit professionals representing diverse nonprofits and groups in Orange County an opportunity to learn and explore strategies in fundraising and to strengthen their organizations’ infrastructure. Scholarship recipients enjoy the resources AFP can provide to their organizations while networking with their peers and learning through sessions, conferences and mentoring.
The Orange County Chapter continues to connect the scholarship recipients to other members and engage them to participate in bi-monthly Mosaic Task Force (the chapter’s Inclusion and Diversity Committee) discussions, monthly education seminars and luncheons on key topics relevant to the field of philanthropy. The monthly education seminars hosted by the chapter also represent opportunities in educating members about diversity and embracing a culture of philanthropy.
As one of the most diverse regions in the world, the New York City Chapter has made great strides this year to fulfill the ideals of diversity and inclusion for which Mr. Stephens passionately advocated. As part of its holistic effort to achieve a broad representation of experiences, perspectives, opinions and cultures, the chapter re-launched its Diversity Committee as an official chapter board initiative and executed its first professional advancement session on engaging communities of color in fundraising this past spring.
The chapter put together an amazing program (Engaging Communities of Color In Your Organization’s Fundraising Program) featuring four speakers covering a wide range of diverse experiences, and then implemented a comprehensive marketing program to chapter members and fundraisers across the area. The chapter also sought to engage participants even before the session, asking attendees to provide questions they had about diversity and inclusion. The session provided excellent feedback and will serve as the foundation for the chapter’s future work in this area.
