AFP Chapter Leaders Give Next Gen Fundraisers a Hand Up!

August 8, 2016

by Leah Eustace, ACFRE

It was wonderful to see so many AFP Chapter leaders, board members, staff and other volunteers in Winnipeg last month at the Canadian Leadership Retreat. We had great discussions about the future of our sector—and had some fun while doing it.

Every year at the retreat, we fundraise in support of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy – Canada, and this year was no different. We chose to raise money for scholarships—the demand for which far outstrips the supply (and demand continues to grow!). The AFP Winnipeg Chapter put together a rainbow auction, with the prizes being gift baskets put together by the chapters across the country, and also organized Inuit games during our visit to Assiniboine Park.

Thanks to the many generous AFP supporters, we raised over $11,000 for the Foundation’s scholarship fund. Scholarships average $600 (but can be up to $1,000), so that means 18 of our fellow fundraisers will have the opportunity to take part in professional development that they might not otherwise have been able to.

Amazing!

As a past scholarship recipient myself, I know what a difference these funds can make. Judging by the show of hands in the room in Winnipeg when I asked how many had received a scholarship in the past for professional development, many of you do, too.

I look forward to seeing everyone again next year, when the retreat comes to my hometown of Ottawa. We’ll celebrate—and advance the work of AFP—for Canada’s 150th in the Capital!
