Take the Youth in Philanthropy Challenge: Focus on Youth Programs in Your Chapter!

July 5, 2016

Two years, ago, the Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) Subcommittee of the Next Generation Committee conducted a survey to identify individual AFP members who were interested in helping develop the philanthropists and professional fundraisers of the future.

While there was quite a bit of interest from individual members, most chapters didn’t have a YIP committee on the local level for them to join and work on youth issues.

The Youth in Philanthropy Subcommittee is starting a new campaign to help any member who is interested in promoting and furthering YIP issues at the chapter level. Even if your chapter doesn’t have an official YIP chair or committee—there are several ways members can get started. And while it’s ideal to work through your chapter, even if you have put together a YIP Committee yourself, you may not know where to begin.

First, check out all of the resources available on the AFP website designed for Youth In Philanthropy programs at http://www.afpnet.org/About/content.cfm?ItemNumber=9379&navItemNumber=9530

Then, think about some easy first steps you can take. If your chapter doesn’t offer a Youth in Philanthropy award, maybe it’s time to start.

Another good first step is using the flier: Top Ten Reasons to Consider a Career as a Professional Fundraiser, which you can access here: http://www.afpnet.org/files/ContentDocuments/YIPCareers_Top10.pdf

Most every community has a high school or organization conducting career fairs. We suggest you either have a booth at a career fair or team up with someone who will have a booth, and pass out the flier to young people there.  It’s a great way to begin the conversation with students, teachers, administration and other advisors.

As is often the case, the first step leads to the next, and before you know it, you will have your YIP program up and running.  At the same time, you can go to your chapter leadership and ask that a committee be established to build upon what you have started.

So accept the YIP challenge and take that first step.  And please let us know how it goes. The Youth in Philanthropy Subcommittee at the AFP International Headquarters will support your efforts any way we can.
