Call for Nominations for the AFP 2018 Board of Directors
April 3, 2017
As Immediate Past-Chair of AFP, it is my great honor to chair the Committee on Directorship (COD) for our association. The COD serves as the nominating committee for AFP. Each member takes his or her responsibilities very seriously. The outstanding leadership the AFP Board has demonstrated through the years comes from the continuing efforts you make in participating in the governance process.
This is a very exciting time—it is your chance to help lead the association dedicated to furthering the profession and philanthropy. The AFP Board needs your involvement to make the nomination process successful. Our Board must be representative of the finest leaders in the profession, and your input will help make that happen!
At the July 2017 meeting, the COD will determine a slate of eight officers, 12 district directors and 10 at-large directors to serve on the AFP Board of Directors starting January 2018. Per our bylaws, elected and appointed board terms are two-year terms. Board members may serve four years in an at-large director position and four years in a district director position. No director may serve more than eight years consecutively on the board in any combination of director categories (elected or appointed), excluding the chair-elect track. However, individuals may return to the board after a minimum one year break in service, but are not eligible to serve in an Officer position that they may have previously held.
You or your chapter may nominate any qualified candidate to serve on the board for a seat as an Officer, District Director or an At-large Director. In 2018, seats that may be available from the District Directors category are Districts A, C, D, E, F, G, H and K. In the At-Large Director category, there will be six possible seats available from those members who have either reached their 4-years max in this category, or carry a two-year term and need to be renewed for another two years; and one member who will roll off the board. The At-large CPC seat will also be available, as this position is a one-year term and must be a chapter president in 2018.
All five individuals currently holding an Officer position are serving in their first year in their Officer position and can serve a second year, if nominated. I encourage you to nominate qualified individuals who have distinguished themselves by serving on the AFP board, holding an Officer position and/or serving in a chapter leadership role for any of these Officer positions. You will find a complete list of the current Board members on the AFP website by clicking the link below:
Remember, you may self-nominate, nominate a colleague, or invite your chapter to nominate you or a colleague.
Prior to making any nomination, please carefully review the criteria for service. Deadline for submission of all completed Directors (Officer, District, or At-large) nomination forms is JUNE 23, 2017.
Please be thorough and provide as much information as possible about the candidate. Some candidates may be asked to supply supplementary information to the Committee to ensure thoughtful consideration. Please contact your nominee in advance of submitting the nomination to determine their willingness to serve. Finally, a current brief bio and photo must accompany the completed Nomination Form.
The COD has identified a number of desired attributes that will be part of the selection process for new Board members as follows:
- Leadership ability which demonstrates the skills needed to govern a professional Association, and
- No less than two (2) years of volunteer service to AFP, philanthropy and the community locally, nationally and/or internationally
Other factors the COD will consider when reviewing the nominees are: five (5) years’ experience and/or employment in the profession or in an industry that serves philanthropy and/or fundraising, education/training or relevant credentialing, geographic location, diversity (all inclusive), type of professional practice, support of the AFP Foundations for Philanthropy, like-size chapter groupings (I-V), membership current and in good standing (has signed the Code of Ethical Standards) and specific leadership needs of the association at the time candidate is being considered.
Remember, the deadline all Officer and/or Director positions is due no later than June 23rd. You can find the nomination form on our web site at www.afpnet.org on the home page. Any problems filling out the form, please contact Rebecca Knight at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you in advance for taking an active role in this year’s nomination process and for encouraging your chapter to do the same. Should you have any questions whatsoever about the process, please don’t hesitate to contact me or staff. We look forward to hearing from you—and we hope you will use this opportunity to make your voice heard.
