New Canadian Online Guide Helps Charity Become Bilingual

(Oct. 16, 2006) A new online guide can help charities develop and improve strategies for offering bilingual services, and while the resource is aimed at Canada’s two official languages, it is general enough that it can be integrated for any language.

Making Your Organization Bilingual is a website developed by Canadian Heritage, although all of the information on the site has been gathered into one PDF document for printing. It focuses on offering services in English and French-Canadian, but contains numerous ideas, strategies and tips that could be used by organizations seeking to provide services in Spanish or any other language.

The website contains sections on the advantages of offering bilingual programs, strategies and guidelines for implementing a bilingual approach and a process for evaluation to ensure organizations are effectively providing bilingual services. Of particular importance is a series of best practices and insights from charities across Canada that have successfully implemented bilingual programs and services, as well as a list of helpful online resources and links.

In addition, this site offers a series of information sheets and practical tools that can be easily customized, printed and grouped together to serve as a useful resource for organizational project leaders and members.

Organizations are also invited to submit comments about their own experiences in implementing bilingual strategies and programs.

Canadian Heritage is a federal department responsible for national policies and programs that promote Canadian content, foster cultural participation, active citizenship and participation in Canada's civic life, and strengthen connections among Canadians.
