Former AFP Chair Ron Carroll, CFRE, Has Passed Away

(Feb. 28, 2005) Ron Carroll, CFRE, a past chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and one of the top fundraisers in the United States for the Boy Scouts of America, passed away on Monday, February 28, 2005.

Ron had battled brain cancer since December, 2003. The illness forced his early retirement as Scout Executive for the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, in the fall of 2004.

Ron was a fundraiser for the Boy Scouts of America for almost 35 years. He got his first taste of fundraising as a nine-year old Cub Scout, raising money for St. Jude's Hospital in Mississippi. His first professional assignment was as district Scout executive in Laurel, Miss.

He served as Scout Executive for several different councils, consistently raising significant amounts of support for each organization. He concluded his career at the National Capital Area Council, one of the five largest councils in the United States, and was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award by the National Council.

Leadership and Vision for AFP

Ron's service for AFP included ten years on the Executive Committee. He served as chair of the association in 1997 and 1998. His other officer positions included Secretary, Vice Chair for Membership, and Chair of the Committee on Directorship. In 1998, he was recognized by The Nonprofit Times as one of the 50 most influential people in the nonprofit sector in the United States. He also received the AFP Chair's Award, one of just 8 people to receive the award in the forty five year history of the association.

One of Ron's key priorities was for AFP to reach out internationally to growing charitable sectors around the world. He led fundraising groups to Russia, the Philippines, South Africa and Cuba. During every trip, he shared his knowledge and experiences with fundraisers there and, equally important, took away new ideas about philanthropy and what it means to serve the public good. AFP's own strategic initiatives in the international arena are based on much of the work he led as chair of AFP's Internationalization Task Force.

Ron served as a model and tireless messenger for ethical fundraising. He was a mentor and friend to innumerable individuals in the philanthropic sector. In keeping with his commitment to these ideals, Ron and his wife Pam have made an initial pledge to establish an endowment for the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy that would support international chapter development outside of North America. More details regarding this gift will be provided as they become available.
