Ohio Fundraiser Carol Carbary Earns Highest Professional Credential from AFP

June 9, 2015

AFP has awarded its highest professional certification, the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), to Carol L. Carbary of Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

Available only to senior-level fundraisers who have worked in the profession for 10 or more years, the ACFRE is a distinguished achievement earned by only 107 professionals since the inception of the program in 1992.

Carbary was born and raised in Auburn, N.Y., the daughter of Terry Carbary and Sandra Byrne Carbary (deceased). She received a BA from Wells College in Aurora, N.Y., a BS in Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and an MBA from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Carol is very involved with the Association of Fundraising Professionals and served nine years on the board of the Cleveland Chapter, including two as president.

Carbary has more than twenty years of development and fundraising experience at institutions such as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), University Hospitals of Cleveland, Kent State University, Cleveland State University, and Cleveland Clinic. She was vice president of advancement at Notre Dame College and president and CEO of the Foundation at North Central State College.

Carbary’s expertise includes leadership, fundraising ethics, strategic planning and goal setting, team-building, prospect management, donor appreciation, major gifts, annual giving and campaigns.

“When I first set the goal of achieving the ACFRE, I saw it as a destination,” says Carbary. “Now I see it more as a journey to consistently develop and champion our profession, continuously learn and constantly improve. I consider it an honor to be able to serve as just one representative of this outstanding and diverse group I am privileged to call colleagues.”

The ACFRE program is the most rigorous certification process available to professional fundraisers.  The process includes a comprehensive application, detailing achievements in practice, education, publishing, teaching, and service to the profession; a written examination that measures a candidate’s knowledge of fundraising as well as the philosophical, ethical, and social aspects of philanthropy; a portfolio representing the candidate’s body of professional work; and an oral peer review in which the candidate must articulate a mastery of advanced-level knowledge in fundraising management, leadership, and ethics.

The ACFRE Certification Board of AFP, chaired by Alice L. Ferris, ACFRE, MBA, oversees the ACFRE candidate review process. Carbary will be honored for her achievement during AFP’s Leadership Academy in October.
