Three Members Earn Their ACFRE

April 8, 2015

Brett Loney, Barbara Tartaglia-Poure and Carol Carbury have become the 105th, 106th and 107th ACFREs, earning the highest fundraising credential AFP offers.

The three members were briefly honored in Baltimore during the 52nd International Fundraising Conference, but will be officially recognized during the Leadership Academy meetings in October later this year.

Like many of the fundraisers who have earned the credential, the three new ACFREs found the experience changed the way they viewed the profession.  Loney says the ACFRE process was about far more than just the next step in certification. The director of corporate and foundation relations for The University of Toledo Foundation says: “Earning the ACFRE has been a process of self-discovery and a chance to really immerse myself in the profession. I learned a lot more about some of the great authors and experts, but the process also helped crystallize my own philosophy of fundraising and my commitment to what we do every day as professionals.”

His colleague, Tartaglia-Poure, who also works at the University of Toledo as associate vice president, agrees. “The ACFRE process is so much more than simply studying all of the experts in our profession,” she says. “It is a journey of self-exploration, one when successfully completed, allows the seeker to find their own voice in our profession of fundraising and philanthropy. Perhaps this quote from Aristotle addresses it best, ‘Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom’.”

The ACFRE program is the most rigorous certification process available to professional fundraisers.  The process includes a comprehensive application, detailing achievements in practice, education, publishing, teaching, and service to the profession; a written examination that measures a candidate’s knowledge of fundraising as well as the philosophical, ethical, and social aspects of philanthropy; a portfolio representing the candidate’s body of professional work; and an oral peer review in which the candidate must articulate a mastery of advanced-level knowledge in fundraising management, leadership, and ethics.

Carol L. Carbary , a consultant in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, saw the goal of achieving the ACFRE as a destination. “But now I see it as a journey to consistently develop and champion our profession, continuously learn and constantly improve,” she says. “I consider it an honor to be able to serve as just one representative of this outstanding and diverse group I am privileged to call colleagues.”

AFP congratulates all three members of achieving this historic career milestone. For more information about earning your ACFRE, including resources and guidance to get you started, click here.
