October 20 – 26: National Estate Planning Awareness Week

October 1, 2014

With more than 120 million people across North America not possessing updated estate plans, AFP and Financial Awareness Foundation are working together to promote National Estate Planning Awareness Week, Oct. 20-26.

Because so many people believe estate and financial planning are just for the wealthy, estate planning is one of the most overlooked areas of personal financial management. But with advance planning, issues such as guardianship of children, managing bill paying and assets in the event of sickness or disability, support of deeply-felt charitable causes, care of a special needs child or parent, long-term care needs, and distribution of retirement assets can all be handled with sensitivity and care.

“Fundraisers are not financial planners, but in our role as advocates for the donor, we should be encouraging our supporters to think about their planning for the future,” said Andrew Watt, FInstF, president and CEO of AFP and an honorary co-chair of the National Estate Planning Awareness Campaign. “A thoughtful and engaged donor is one who has planned and understands what he or she can give, and we should be talking with donors about others about the importance of financial planning and how through planning they can support our organizations.”

Through the National Estate Planning Awareness Week, AFP and the Financial Awareness Foundation hope to:

  • Educate families on how better and cost effectively address their personal financial challenges.
  • Highlight the role of nonprofits in financial planning and how charities can experience increased donations, planned gifts, alternate beneficiary selections and bequests.
  • Celebrate a stronger and more financial sound community through financial planning.

AFP members can learn more at the campaign website and resource center that includes press releases, sample articles and checklists, fact sheets and more (scroll to the bottom of the page for these resources). Members are encouraged to download these documents and personalize them for their own use in communicating with donors, volunteers and other supporters.

Here are some easy ways to participate:

1.              Placing estate and financial planning editorial content in your website, newsletters, social media groups, local newspapers, and radio/television/web-based shows, in support of National Estate Planning Awareness Week.

2.              Encouraging participating groups to host or take part in community-wide programs built around estate and financial planning during the month of October.

3.              Circulating financial awareness campaign materials and the Press & Industry Media Kits and Guides found on the campaign website to your members, colleagues, associates, and other parties as you see appropriate and encouraging them to support and participate in these important events.

4.              Be sure to email your articles, checklists, ads, and seminar/webinar activity notices so we can highlight them and you in the 2014 National Estate Planning Awareness Week Campaign Report and Scrapbook.

Thank you for your efforts in improving estate planning and financial planning through the National Estate Planning Awareness Week!
