Guidelines to Use Letters to Employers Template

The Association of Fundraising Professionals knows that membership dues are often paid by the member’s employer. This means the prospective member must be able to state the case for membership to the employer. To facilitate this conversation, AFP has developed two templates for two letters, one advocating for a first-time member and one for renewal.
The use of these letters is not required and serves only as templates for recruitment and retention.
- The chapter president may use this letter when a potential member expresses reservation about approaching his/her employer to cover the cost of members. Personalizing the letter with the prospective member’s name and position within the organization would be appropriate.
- The chapter membership chair may use this letter as a recruitment tool, mailing it to multiple nonprofit agencies with professional fundraisers on staff.
A renewing member may request this letter be sent on his/her behalf. It is recommended that the letter be personalized to include the name of the renewing member, number of years the individual has been a member of AFP, and possibly any service to the chapter or association.
