Edmonton Chapter Receives Sponsorship for Essentials Program

October 22, 2006

(Oct. 23, 2006) The AFP Edmonton and Area Chapter has received a sponsorship from the Edmonton Real Estate Board (EREB) to hold the Essentials of Fundraising Program.

The $30,000 sponsorship will allow the chapter to present the program throughout the region at a nominal cost to participants and to market it to a variety of grassroots organizations.

“The REALTOR® sponsorship will enable our chapter to invest in making the content of this international AFP training program relevant to the Alberta context,” said Julie Hamilton, CFRE, associate director of development at the University of Edmonton and president of the AFP Edmonton chapter. “It will also enable us to ensure that we have sufficient experienced trainers on the ground to deliver this training program. We are grateful for the generous support of the REALTORS®.”

Hamilton applauded the work of Nina Jocic-Andrejevic, CFRE, fund development and management counsel for Jocic-Andrejevic & Assoc. in Edmonton and chair of the chapter’s Essentials Committee. “Nina took on the role of putting the modules together and connected our chapter with the EREB. She has done extraordinary work on this project; it wouldn’t be where it is without her contributions.”

The Edmonton Chapter plans to reach about 150 individuals and organizations annually through the Essentials program, and already has nearly 50 participants just a few weeks after the announcement of the sponsorship.

Hamilton also acknowledged the efforts of Jon Hall, CAE, communications manager for the EREB. “Jon was an early believer in our program, and we very much appreciate his support and the support of everyone at the board.

According to Mark Perras, vice president of the EREB, the program’s focus on ethics is one of the key reasons the sponsorship was made. “To become a REALTOR®, one must subscribe to the REALTORS® Code of Ethics,” Perras explained. “It ensures that they can continue to buy and sell real estate within our cooperative structure. Without an ethical framework, the marketplace would be chaotic.”

The EREB, founded in 1927, is a professional association of more than 3,100 brokers and agents in the greater Edmonton area. The board administers the Multiple Listing Service®, provides professional education to its members and enforces a strict Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Practice. The EREB also supports charities involving shelter and the homeless through the Edmonton Realtors’ Charitable Foundation (ERCF).

About the Essentials of Fundraising

The AFP Essentials of Fundraising series offers introductory-level sessions on fundraising theory and practice and is designed to help grassroots organizations raise money more effectively and efficiently. This series of five three-hour interactive workshops includes case studies and projects, making the learning experience both substantive and enjoyable.

The interactive workshops address:

  • Starting an integrated development program
  • Identifying and soliciting annual donors
  • Seeking grant support
  • Board and volunteer development
  • Individual major gifts

The program is targeted to grass roots organizations that typically have limited resources to attend any form of professional development training. Others also will benefit from the program.

  • Anyone new to the development field will learn how to organize and manage fundraising programs, gain basic skills in a variety of techniques and prepare for a career in development.
  • Volunteers will find the Essentials of Fundraising valuable preparation for gift solicitation.
  • Board members, trustees and executive directors will discover useful tools to shape the direction and clarify the expectations of the development office.
