AFP Releases Guidance for Members, Chapters on Social Media

(Nov. 16, 2010) Social media is a fast-moving, fluid environment, with ever-shifting rules and new technology.  In order to provide resources and guidance for members and volunteer leaders, and especially to support ethical guidelines that already exist, AFP has developed a working document called Social Media Guidelines: Ethical, Safe and Effective Practical Standards.

The goal of the Social Media Guidelines is to both provide fundraising professionals guidance on social media for their workplace and to establish standards for organization leaders to use with their staff, consultants, volunteers, members, stakeholders and affiliated groups. This document also covers the conduct and expectations of the public when participating in an organization's social media or social networking platforms.

The Social Media Guidelines can be accessed via the AFP website at www.afpnet.org/SocialMediaGuidelines

"Thanks to the tremendous effort of many AFP members and affiliated friends, we now have a document that sets down bright-line standards and guidelines for those who engage in social media," said Nicci Noble, CFRE, president of Noble Services LLC in San Francisco, who helped chair the task force responsible for drafting the Social Media Guidelines. "Our hope is that members, chapters, and anyone else can use this document to advance their social media efforts, and feel secure as they branch out into this world."

At present, the Social Media Guidelines are offered in both a quick one-page summary for easy reference, as well as the full document with examples.  AFP will continue to update and enhance the Social Media Guidelines as we move forward. We ask those interested or who have some insight to share to send us your thoughts, comments and examples so that we can incorporate them into the document. Please send your information to webmaster@afpnet.org with the subject "Social Media Guidelines."

Thank you for your interest in the Social Media Guidelines. For more information about AFP's social media presence and efforts, please visit the AFP Online Communities page at www.afpnet.org/OnlineCommunities.
