Shine a Light on Your Organization!
Even facing challenges in the economy, many organizations are meeting or exceeding their goals.
Consider the 2010 honorees, Guardian Angel Settlement Association (GASA) and Rice University's Centennial Challenge to Young Alumni. Founded in 1859, GASA had depended primarily on event-based fundraising for a majority of its revenue. But in order to construct a new child development center, the association began a $2.5 million capital campaign. With one person in the fundraising department and with the support of its board and capital campaign committee, GASA succeeded its original goal and raised more than $4.1 million.
Facing declining rates of overall alumni participation, Rice University implemented the Centennial Challenge to Young Alumni gift-matching program to energize young alumni from the previous ten graduating classes. The challenge featured an innovative marketing campaign that integrated direct mail, email internet solicitations and student calling. Young alumni donors increased by 25 percent and more than 1,600 young alumni made annual gifts. The challenge had such an impact that the overall participation rate increased despite the challenging economy.
