AFP Presents Omaha Fundraising Consultant Paul Strawhecker with Highest Volunteer Honor
(Oct. 27, 2009) AFP has recently bestowed the Barbara Marion Award for Outstanding Leadership to AFP, the association's highest volunteer and leadership recognition, to Paul J. Strawhecker, MPA, ACFRE.
Strawhecker is the president of Paul J. Strawhecker Inc., a fundraising consulting firm, in Omaha. He has been a member of the association since 1982, serving in a variety of leadership positions and spearheading several important initiatives for AFP and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy.
AFP is the largest association of fundraisers in the world, and the award is named for Barbara Marion, ACFRE, the first woman to chair both the AFP and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy boards of directors. The Barbara Marion Award is given to a leader in the fundraising profession who has worked on the local, regional, national, and international levels to help build, advance, and promote AFP and fundraising. In addition, the honoree demonstrates involvement in the creation, development, training, teaching, and/or mentoring of programs, campaigns, and initiatives for AFP and its members and supports them financially.
Strawhecker has been an influential leader in the association for nearly three decades, working to create new chapters, mentor young practitioners and strengthen educational and training opportunities. He has served as President of AFP's Nebraska Chapter (1997-98) and as Charter President for the Mid-Michigan (1988-90) and North Dakota (1984-85) Chapters.
One of the most critical leadership roles Strawhecker played was chairing the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy in 2007 and 2008. He helped lead the Foundation in a number of new initiatives, and is also a charter member of the Foundation's Leadership Society and Omega Circle.
Strawhecker also was the 27th person to earn the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE) credential, one of just 90 fundraisers in the world to achieve this distinction. He has three books about resource development and has given more than 150 presentations across North America. He has been an instructor in the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Certificate of Fundraising Management program for 14 years, and has coordinated the program since 2002.
"Paul Strawhecker has made an indelible impact on AFP and the fundraising profession that will not be soon forgotten," said Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP. "I know Paul well both as a colleague and friend, and he gives so much to the profession. His contributions have been extraordinary, and we're honored to have this opportunity to recognize him with this well-deserved award."
Strawhecker was honored during the AFP Leadership Academy in Orlando, Fla., Sept. 30 - Oct. 2, 2009.
