2008 Honoree Snapshot
When ForKids opened its 30-day emergency shelter in 1991, it was run by a staff of five dedicated people within its founding church community. Thanks to funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the organization expanded from its grassroots beginning into a large human services provider. However, HUD funding began to change, leaning more on match grant requirements and leaving ForKids in need of significant new funding through community fundraising.
Starting from scratch with marketing materials and development staff, ForKids staff and board members began developing practical, creative strategies to raise the agency’s profile and increase contributions from the community. With ambitious goals, careful planning and creative fundraising initiatives, ForKids increased its community contributions by 958 percent in six years, from $104,000 in 2001 to more than $850,000 in 2007. To further meet needs brought about with the downturn of the economy, ForKids raised $1.1 million in FY2008.
“Through creative, ambitious fundraising initiatives and careful strategic planning, ForKids successfully met their funding challenges head-on, making them an amazing example to all nonprofit organizations,” said Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP. “I encourage AFP members to nominate your organization for this wonderful award made possible by Campbell & Company.”
