New Orleans High School Student Earns International Youth Philanthropy Award

(Arlington, VA)  Princeton Carter, a 16-year old student attending Newman High School in New Orleans, La., has been named the 2014 Bob Carter Companies Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy, Individual, by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

Carter will receive his honor at the National Philanthropy Day® Honors: A Celebration of People and Impact event on Nov. 15 in Washington, D.C. at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

A chance meeting with a homeless veteran sparked Carter’s interest in the issue and led him to start a collection drive for gift cards at his school and give them to homeless and other veterans in need during the holiday season. He ultimately partnered with Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans and raised more than $11,000 for its Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.

Carter didn’t stop there. With the help of the agency’s president and CEO James LeBlanc, he helped to establish the Volunteers of America’s Youth Leadership Council, which helps young people gain leadership skills and expands their understanding of the community and its needs.

“With the help of God, my parents, Mr. LeBlanc and Ms. Scanlan at Volunteers of America, I've had the privilege to help my fellow man,” says Princeton.

Carter is active in several charities through his school, Newman High School and its Action Committee for Community Service.   He is also focused on furthering the work of the non-profit organization he founded at age 14, My Brother’s Keeper Newman, in order to make the world a better place, one meal at a time.

Carter has also volunteered his time and efforts for Covenant House, the Destiny Christian Center and the Metropolitan Center for Women and Children.

The National Philanthropy Day® Honors recognize outstanding leadership, commitment and generosity in philanthropy. Carter is one of six finalists who will be honored on National Philanthropy Day®, Nov. 15, the day to celebrate philanthropy and its impact on the world.
