Pier 1 Imports Named 2006 Outstanding Corporation
(March 20, 2006) Fort Worth, Texas-based Pier 1 Imports has been named the 2006 Outstanding Corporation by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
The award recognizes a corporation or corporate foundation for exceptional commitment to philanthropy and community involvement. Pier 1 was nominated for the award by the AFP Texas, Fort Worth Metro Chapter. The company will be honored at the Awards for Philanthropy Banquet during the AFP International Conference on Fundraising in Atlanta on April 4, 2006.

Long-Standing Partnerships and Support
During the last 20 years, Pier 1 has contributed more than $30 million to philanthropic organizations at the international, national and local levels. Its philanthropic programs are marked by long-standing partnerships with several organizations, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County and E.M. Daggett Elementary School in Fort Worth.
Pier 1 has not only given millions to UNICEF, but is also the world’s largest retailer of UNICEF holiday greeting cards, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the organization. Pier 1’s partnership with UNICEF has expanded over the years to include an annual holiday greeting card contest for children, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, a Mother’s Day gift card promotion and special products such as the UNICEF “Peace Makes the World Go Round” CD.
Pier 1 has worked with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation since 1991, when it became one of the first national sponsors of the Komen Race for the Cure® series. The company has introduced a series of products that support the Foundation, including the annual Komen Candle and the new Komen Jewelry Box. Pier 1 also pays for associates’ entry fees for their local Komen Race for the Cure® events. Nearly 28,000 Pier 1 associates, friends and family members have participated in the annual races as “Team Pier 1.” Pier 1 has donated more than $4 million to the Komen Foundation and is a member of Komen’s Million Dollar Council.
