Pier 1 Imports Named 2006 Outstanding Corporation

(March 20, 2006) Fort Worth, Texas-based Pier 1 Imports has been named the 2006 Outstanding Corporation by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).

The award recognizes a corporation or corporate foundation for exceptional commitment to philanthropy and community involvement. Pier 1 was nominated for the award by the AFP Texas, Fort Worth Metro Chapter. The company will be honored at the Awards for Philanthropy Banquet during the AFP International Conference on Fundraising in Atlanta on April 4, 2006.

“On behalf of everyone at Pier 1 Imports, I’m proud to accept this prestigious award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals,” said Marvin Girouard, Pier 1’s Chairman and CEO. “Pier 1 has a tradition of giving back to the communities where our customers and associates live as well as the international communities from which we import our merchandise. We truly value our philanthropic partnerships and programs that have been cultivated over the years. Thank you for this tremendous honor.”

Long-Standing Partnerships and Support

During the last 20 years, Pier 1 has contributed more than $30 million to philanthropic organizations at the international, national and local levels. Its philanthropic programs are marked by long-standing partnerships with several organizations, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the United Way of Metropolitan Tarrant County and E.M. Daggett Elementary School in Fort Worth.

Pier 1 has not only given millions to UNICEF, but is also the world’s largest retailer of UNICEF holiday greeting cards, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the organization. Pier 1’s partnership with UNICEF has expanded over the years to include an annual holiday greeting card contest for children, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, a Mother’s Day gift card promotion and special products such as the UNICEF “Peace Makes the World Go Round” CD.

Pier 1 has worked with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation since 1991, when it became one of the first national sponsors of the Komen Race for the Cure® series. The company has introduced a series of products that support the Foundation, including the annual Komen Candle and the new Komen Jewelry Box. Pier 1 also pays for associates’ entry fees for their local Komen Race for the Cure® events. Nearly 28,000 Pier 1 associates, friends and family members have participated in the annual races as “Team Pier 1.” Pier 1 has donated more than $4 million to the Komen Foundation and is a member of Komen’s Million Dollar Council.

“Most companies have philanthropic giving programs, but Pier 1’s comprehensive approach to supporting charities makes it one of the leading corporations in the world,” said Paulette V. Maehara, CFRE, CAE, president and CEO of AFP. “It is a shining example that you can do good and do well, and AFP is honored to name Pier 1 our 2006 Outstanding Corporation.”
